Which kind of apples to use for an apple crumble?

Apple season brings a plethora of options. Red apples, Granny Smith apples, Gala apples, and Pink Lady apples are just a few kinds of apples you might encounter in an orchard or a fruit stand. But which apples should you choose? You’ll want an apple with a firm texture and a sweet or tart flavor for the best apple crumble recipe.

If you enjoy a tart apple, choose them, if you like a sweeter apple, you can use those too for baking as long as they’re firm. Tart apples pair well with this classic dessert‘s sweet, crumbly topping, but sweeter apples also work fine. It really is up to your preferred taste.

You’re really looking for a nice firm and crisp apple that will hold up to baking. Soft apples do not work for baked apple dishes, soft apples tend to bake down to almost an apple sauce texture. You want slices with a bit of body left in them.

Granny Smith apples are a favorite of many because of their crispiness. Macintosh, Gala, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady and Bramley apples are also nice crisp apples, perfect for any apple dessert.

If you only have soft textured apples and have to make a dessert, you can use them. They will make for a softer filling, but it will still be an apple dessert

The ingredients for this dessert are all dry and fridge pantry staples. So you won’t have to go out and buy anything to make this recipe.

  • fresh apples, peeled or unpeeled, see below!
  • sugar
  • allspice
  • cinnamon
  • cornstarch
  • lemon juice
  • all-purpose flour
  • brown sugar
  • salt
  • butter, room temperature

Do I need to peel apples to bake with them?

You can peel your apples for this recipe OR you can leave them on the apple. The peels do cook through so it’s fine to leave them on. The nutrients of the peel stay in your recipe that way.

If you like, you can peel them! Sometimes I peel and sometimes I don’t it depends on my time and energy. Want to make it easy? Use an apple peeler!

Crisp or Crumble?

What’s the difference between apple crisp and apple crumble? Both are delicious dessert favorites that are quite similar. The primary difference lies in the topping. Crumble topping is more like a streusel, often involving flour, sugar, and butter. On the other hand, a crisp usually includes oats in its topping, making it, well, crispier.

Our family is a huge crisp fan. We love apple crisp, peach crisp, and blueberry crisp, and a strawberry rhubarb crisp. But we also enjoy a crumble like this peach crumble! Do you like crisps or crumbles?

What to serve with an Apple Crumble

To take this cozy dessert up a notch, add a topping! You can serve this crumble with so many tasty toppings. Such as heavy cream, cool whip, clotted cream, whipped cream, and even ice cream! You can’t go wrong with cool creamy toppings for such classic desserts! If you need minimal effort, go premade with whipping cream in a can or cool whip. Ice cream requires just scooping so it’s easy enough.

Want to make it even better? Try making my salted caramel sauce over the crumble’s top. This homemade caramel sauce takes a humble crumble and knocks it straight out of the park.

More apple desserts

If you’ve been to the apple orchard, then you probably need lots of apple-y recipes. You’re in the right place! Try my apple tart, Dutch apple bread, caramel apple dump cake, or my crumb-top apple pie!

Got leftovers?

Store leftovers lightly at room temperature for up to 2 days. It’s best lightly covered with aluminum foil, but if you need to seal it in air-tight containers, those also work fine. The crumble mixture will get softer when it’s tightly covered, just so you know it.
