Super moist and almost trifle-like, Heaven-on-Earth cake is a traditional dessert well known to our grandparents. Plus, when you start with a prepared angle food cake, it can be a no-bake cake!

It’s deliciously indulgent and can be varied easily enough to use in-season fruits to maximize flavor. And since it needs to settle for a bit, it’s the perfect dessert to bring along to gatherings and potlucks because it can be made well in advance.

What Can I Use Instead Of Cool Whip?

Cool Whip is used simply because it holds up in a dessert or on a cake. You could use homemade whipped cream. Remember that whipped cream will not stand up long if left to sit, just 2-3 hours at most! It’s best to make stabilized whipped cream.

Tips To Make The Best Heaven On Earth Cake

This kind of cake needs a few solid hours of chilling time for the angel food cake to soak up all the flavors. This means that it’s best made the night before you need it. This is why non-stabilized whipped cream is needed for this recipe.

Though the cake is delicious in a baking dish, if you serve it in a trifle bowl, guests can see the layers of the dessert, which makes it even more mouthwatering.

You need to make the angel food cake in advance. Before assembling the heaven-on-earth cake, make sure that the angel cake has cooled completely.

How To Vary The Recipe

The best part about a heaven-on-earth cake is that there are so many ways to make it unique!

Pie filling: any flavor of pie filling will work in this case, which means it’s an easy way to change up the flavors. My homemade bing cherry pie filling is our favorite and perfect for summertime.

Sunshine twist: in place of the almond extract, add fresh lemon juice or zest to give it a burst of refreshing flavor.

The crunch: though it calls for almonds, any nuts will work. Try using pecans or pistachios for an indulgent twist. And of course you can leave them off if you have a nut allergy.

The base: Angel foods cake is the most common for a heaven on earth cake as it absorbs the pudding mixture the best. However, pound cake, vanilla sponge cake, or even chocolate brownies can add a unique twist. Personally buying a premade cake is the best cake to use in this recipe. It makes it SO easy.

How To Store The Cake

You can store leftovers in the same way you let the cake chill. Wrap the serving dish in plastic wrap and pop it into the fridge for 2 days.

Do not store the heaven-on-earth cake. The texture from the pudding once thawed doesn’t hold up. If you must, make the angel food cake and store that in the freezer until you need it.

Other Favorite Cake Recipes

A good cake recipe is crucial during BBQ and Holiday seasons. One of my go-to cakes is orange pound cake because everyone loves it. Below are a few other recipes I use often:
