This is a simple way to use them up that has nothing to do with marshmallows or a bowl of cereal. Try making these savory cheesy Rice Krispie Crackers with them and watch them disappear!

Rice Krispie Crackers bake up like a savory cheesy shortbread, with little bursts of crispy puffed rice throughout, turning something overlooked into an easy, snack-able cracker. They’re bigger and thicker than a store bought cracker which means they make a much better snack than a flat pasty saltine.

A bowl of shredded cheddar, a stick of butter, a small bowl of cayenne, a measuring cup of Rice Krispies, and a bowl of flour are arranged on a white surface—perfect ingredients for making homemade Rice Krispie Crackers.

What You Need To Make Rice Krispie Crackers

One of the best things about this recipe is that all the ingredients are common pantry items, you don’t need anything special to make them. If you don’t have sharp cheddar you can use regular cheddar or medium cheddar.

If Your Rice Krispies Are Stale

If your puffed rice cereal has gone soft, all is not lost. You can bring it back to life with a little dry heat.

For several cups of cereal spread them out in a thin layer on a baking sheet. Bake at about 300° for 5 to 10 minutes, do not let them burn. Stir it once halfway through so it heats evenly. Let it cool completely before using, and you should have crispy rice cereal again!

If you only need a small amount, like the cup for this recipe, you can also use a skillet over low heat. Stir it often and keep the heat low so the cereal it dries out without burning.

The key is removing the moisture, not cooking them more or browning them. Either way you choose to toast them keep the heat moderate and don’t rush it.

How To Store These Crackers

Cool completely before storing. Then store crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days. If they soften, a quick warm-up in the oven helps bring the texture back. They can also be made ahead and kept for snacking. Let them cool fully before storing.
