What’s the difference between a crisp and a crumble?

These desserts both feature soft sweet fruit, often a summer fruit or berry. Then they’re baked together with a crumby topping until the mixture reaches the perfect combination of syrupy fruit and that topping.

The difference lies in the topping. A crumble is just a crumby topping made of flour, butter, sugar, and often an egg. It’s kind of biscuity.

The fruit crisp on the other hand, is made with oats in the same sort of crumby topping. While it bakes up in the oven the oats get crunchy. This topping is almost more like a granola-ish topping. You can add nuts to the topping if you like.

Both fruity desserts are very popular in the summer and people often have their own names for each dessert. They’re not the wrong names, and it’s just the names they grew up with and will always call their dessert by the name they used as a kid.

How To Store A Crumble

The trick to storing a crumble is to keep it uncovered as long as possible. Serve it as fresh as possible and hope it gets eaten quickly.

Cover any leftover crumble lightly with foil or saran wrap. Store it at room temperature for up to a day, then put it in the fridge for longer-term storage. If you cover it tightly, the topping will become soft and gooey. You could warm it up in the oven, and the topping will firm up slightly.
