Pilot Bread Tundra Tostadas

Alaskans eat MORE Pilot Bread than any other state. What is this thing called Pilot Bread? Think big thick cracker that’s sturdy enough to go out to hunting camps and everyone loves it and you’ve got Pilot Bread. It could be the FOOD for Alaska if Salmon weren’t in the picture. When I was little we always had pilot bread on hand, my dad hunted and fished a lot but as kids, we also just ate it whenever we were hungry. Most states don’t even sell Pilot Bread, but you can get it online. That’s an affiliate link; I earn a small commission if people use it to purchase Pilot Bread.

Sailor Boy Pilot Bread is part of our Emergency Preparedness Plan

In Alaska, you pretty much need to be ready. You need to be prepared for a week-long windstorm that will knock your power out. Or an earthquake. And you need to be ready for three feet of snow. In all of those cases, no matter what, you still have to eat. You may not have power, but you will need food, and the wise will have stores of food that will keep for a long time and still taste good. We stock our pantry and storage pantry with canned meats, beans, soups, canned smoked salmon, canned fruit and vegetables and we’re almost ready to live through any rough patch. Add water, a radio, a heat source and the every present pilot bread and you’re just about set.

How to Enjoy Pilot Bread?

Pilot Bread is just a large round hardtack type cracker that keeps almost indefinitely, and you can use it in various ways. Eat it like as a cracker, like a slice of bread, crumbled in soup, toasted and buttered. I like to think of it as an edible plate, load it up and chow down. You can put anything ON it, and it just works.
