FACT: Iced Coffee and Cold Brew Are Not The Same

For years, I labored under the assumption that cold coffee drinks were just that, cold coffee. Until I stopped to think about it one day. Actually it was last year when I wrote a few pieces on iced coffee and cold brew. And sat down to figure it out.

Cold coffee drinks are so popular it kind blows my mind that I didn’t know the difference, although they taste differently. And that I didn’t realize that cold brew and iced coffee from popular coffee shops were not the same price. I finally put everything together, price and flavor differences and realized that they are in fact NOT THE SAME.

Iced Coffee.

Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is in fact just cold coffee. You can make your favorite morning coffee. Enjoy a hot cup and then pour the remaining coffee in a jar or bottle. Set it in the fridge to chill until you’re ready for an iced coffee drink. Pour it over ice, add milk and flavoring as desired. Suddenly you’re making expensive drinks at home. No barista needed.

A person pours cold brew coffee from a pitcher into a glass with ice. Nearby are coffee beans, sugar cubes, and ground coffee. The words "COLD BREW" are displayed beside the glass.

Cold Brew

Cold brew is a different drink. It’s brewed cold. And that the brewing process brings out deeper flavor profiles. Things you wouldn’t taste in regular brewed coffee or iced coffee. The long cold brewing does this. Sometimes it amazing, and sometimes that flavor is just so-so.

To make cold brew you put coffee grounds in a mason jar or a french press. Cold or luke warm water is added along with a lid for the jar or the french press. Then the whole contraption is placed in the refrigerator to brew for at least 12 hours. But 24 hours really makes a good cold brew.

Once brewed strain and make drinks as desired. It’s messier than just iced coffee, but if you like deep dark coffee, then this one might be for you.
