A good cobb salad recipe is a family favorite because there’s something for everyone! Plus it’s handy if you need dinner in a hurry and it’s too hot to cook.

For my salad, I layered everything on top of the lettuce base in a single layer on a platter. I love the way it looks served like that. But you can also just make this on 4 separate plates OR in a big salad bowl.

ingredients in lines

What you need:

  • cooked crisp bacon
  • blue cheese or use sharp cheddar cheese
  • corn
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • chicken breast
  • ripe avocado
  • tomatoes
  • romaine lettuce or mixed greens
  • chopped or shredded cabbage
  • PLUS dressing
  • large serving platter to layer the salad on
  • OR a large bowl to toss the salad in

WHAT KIND OF LETTUCE is in this salad?

Usually, it’s Romaine OR Iceberg lettuce. But you can use ANY lettuce OR greens you like. green leaf lettuce, red leaf, butter lettuce, microgreens, baby lettuce greens, and so on. I added shredded or chopped cabbage, it gives the salad a little more oomph.

And as ALWAYS change this up to suit you. Love croutons ADD THEM. Want grilled chicken? DO IT. Got edible flowers, use them. This is cobb salad recipe is what I call inspiration, now make it yours.

WHAT KIND OF DRESSING TO USE?

Whatever your FAVORITE dressing happens to be. I think the classic cobb salad dressing is a creamy vinaigrette style. I personally think a creamy-style homemade dressing suits this big hearty salad much better. Use a homemade ranch dressing, my bacon ranch or jalapeno ranch are delish recipes to try out here. Or go for a big and bold creamy blue cheese dressing.

The only thing I don’t think would work well on salad might be a runny vinaigrette. In my opinion, it would be too runny, and that’s no fun.

To Store Leftovers

If you have leftover salad store it in an airtight container. Don’t add salad dressing until you’re ready to eat the salad. To send for lunch send the salad and dressing in separate containers.
