The Most Alaskan Day in Alaska

Seriously. This is how the day went down: massive earthquake, snow, long drive in snow, snow, moose through the yard, snow, snow, planned salmon for dinner, owl in the woods, the end. This is the perfect recipe for The Most Alaskan Day in Alaska. Starts with a bang, has typical Alaskan shenanigans, some Alaskan ungulates in the yard and the literal mascot for Alaskan on your dinner plate, a bird of prey in the woods. And you?

This is how the day went down: massive earthquake, snow, long drive in snow, snow, moose through the yard, snow, snow, planned salmon for dinner, owl in the woods, the end. This is the perfect recipe for The Most Alaskan Day in Alaska. Starts with a bang, has typical Alaskan shenanigans, some Alaskan ungulates in the yard and the literal mascot for Alaskan on your dinner plate, a bird of prey in the woods. And you? EARTHQUAKE Like almost every other Alaskan I woke up early this morning to the feeling of rocking and rolling. It wasn't  giant and crashing just a gentle almost slip and slide of an earthquake. I finally woke up enough to realize that DAMN IT WAS an earthquake, and it was still going on. It went on long enough that I became alarmed, almost to the point of jumping out of bed instead I just woke up my husband who had no clue why I had his arm in a death grip. After I told him we were having an earthquake he promptly fell back to sleep. After that it finally quite slipping and sliding. SO I went back to sleep. Completely oblivious the fact that it was so huge there was a tsunami warning, typical. SNOW Then when I got up later I saw that it finally snowed. Like appreciable inches of snow. And of course this was the ONE day my husband had to go to work early AND then drive to Anchorage during the morning commute. He texted me from a complete standstill on the highway. It simply read "TRAFFIC JAM". (We use voice to text, calm down!) Meanwhile I was left with the 21 year old suburban to drive kids to school in, it runs ok, but who can blame a vehicle with 300K miles on it? What a long slow drive that was. Then while I was sitting down working I felt a shudder in the floor and thought well here we go again. But something caught my eye out the window and just in time I see a mama moose and her calf go charging right by the house. Ok not an earthquake just some moose. And it's still snowing. Go ALASKA. Salmon So at this point I decide it's the Most Alaskan Day in Alaska and decide we'll have Salmon Tacos for Taco Tuesday because what else IS more Alaskan than earthquakes, snow, and moose? Only Salmon. But When I went to the freezer we were OUT of sockeye salmon. I guess it's time to fishing again. Oh well, second choice then is Alaska Meat Company Ground Beef. More snow.  Owl My boys finished their day at Boy Scouts and I stepped out the door to go fetch them home I heard a familiar beloved sound, a Great Grey Owl hooting in our woods. I actually caught it on live video over on Instagram if you want to check it out. (like my photo so I know you checked it out!) So that's how we had The Most Alaskan Day in Alaska.

EARTHQUAKE

Like almost every other Alaskan I woke up early this morning to the feeling of rocking and rolling. It wasn’t  giant and crashing just a gentle almost slip and slide of an earthquake.

SNOW

Then when I got up later I saw that it finally snowed. Like appreciable inches of snow. And of course this was the ONE day my husband had to go to work early AND then drive to Anchorage during the morning commute. He texted me from a complete standstill on the highway. It simply read “TRAFFIC JAM”. (We use voice to text, calm down!) Meanwhile I was left with the 21 year old suburban to drive kids to school in, it runs ok, but who can blame a vehicle with 300K miles on it? What a long slow drive that was.

Moose

Then while I was sitting down working I felt a shudder in the floor and thought well here we go again. But something caught my eye out the window and just in time I see a mama moose and her calf go charging right by the house. Ok not an earthquake just some moose. And it’s still snowing. Go ALASKA.

Salmon

So at this point I decide it’s the Most Alaskan Day in Alaska and decide we’ll have Salmon Tacos for Taco Tuesday because what else IS more Alaskan than earthquakes, snow, and moose? Only Salmon. But When I went to the freezer we were OUT of sockeye salmon. I guess it’s time to fishing again. Oh well, second choice then is Alaska Meat Company Ground Beef. More snow.

Owl

My boys finished their day at Boy Scouts and I stepped out the door to go fetch them home I heard a familiar beloved sound, a Great Grey Owl hooting in our woods.
