Spring in Alaska is called break up, because well everything is breaking up, lakes, creeks, your driveway, the garden, your mental state, relationships, you name it and I bet they’re all cracking under the stress. I kid I kid about cabin fever and relationships but everything else is spot on. We are awash in water, melt, and even rain which is such a great sound to hear after 7 months. Winter boots are giving way to breakupboots. When I was little I didn’t know what rubber boots were but sure as shooting I had breakupboots and I didn’t figure out that no one else called them that until I was in my 20s.
This year break up has been a tease. It was warm and sunny in March and then it snowed a foot, then it was warm and sunny in April and it snowed a foot. I’ve lived here all my life and I have never seen anything like this, this extended non-advancement of spring. Usually we’re popping leaves the first week of May, that’s less than 2 weeks out and we still have so much snow left. Oh well I suppose the fire danger is low right? Silver lining!
I don’t see leaves in our near future do you?
