Paula Deen’s Popcorn Balls

How long has it been since you had a popcorn ball? Yeah, me either! Our neighbors made them when I was growing up but we never did. I don’t know why, perhaps boiling sugar for 10 minutes was too much for my mom? After reading about them on the Mom Food Project blog I decided to make them and I too used Paula Deen’s recipe. I made the popcorn earlier in the day and when Union came home from school we had a snack and boiled up some sugar.

It was only mildly fun for them after measuring ingredients out because being my mothers daughter I would NOT let them near a pot of boiling sugar water. So while I cooked and cooked and cooked the sugar they munched apples and then beat the grunt out of each other. That’s what they do. When the sugar hit 255˚ I called them back and they watched while I poured it over the popcorn and stirred it in. They liked seeing how it had changed and turned to syrup.

When it was cooled we buttered our hands and made popcorn balls, or bombs as the youngest decided they were. It was fun visiting and just hanging out. We get to do this everyday but this just felt different. Simple and nice during a ‘holiday’ that gets more outrageous every year.

I have a question for you: who the HELL decided we needed inflatable lawn decorations? for Halloween? It seems they crap they hawk at the store gets more and more outrageous every year. Just a thought.

  1. People who put those up should be shunned so they are to never do it or buy them again. :p

My mom made a killer caramel corn…mmmm. Think we'll have to do that again.

  2. I have a bad memory as a kid about a popcorn ball. I had never had one and was so excited to bring it home from school and I left it on the BUS! I was like in kindergarten and I STILL remember! I so should make these! Thanks!

  3. I don't understand the inflatable lawn ornaments for any holiday. Its tacky and a waste of energy. Its odd to me that those are popularized when corn shocks and pumpkins are attractive and inexpensive.

  4. I haven't had a popcorn ball since I was like.. 7 or 8 maybe? My grandma always had a "stash" at their house before they moved and my cousin and I would "sneak" them.

I'm not a fan of boiling sugar either. But I should for nostalgias sake. LOVE the littlest (I forget your nickname for him!!) finger licking good pics! hehe

I'm not a fan of the inflatable lawn ornaments either. 1) waste of electricity 2)look stupid during the day when they're flat in the yard like some tarp or trash bag thrown out there haphazardly 3) extra stupid here b/c half the time they're collapsed or buried under snow

  5. I've come to hate all Halloween decorations- the trashy ones on lawns actually yank my chain less than the creepy talking motion-sensor ones in the stores. Hate. Them. I just embrace religious freakness and skip the whole thing &, apparently, I'm far from the biggest freak. Some other kid at school told Gabe they don't do halloween either because it's the devil's birthday. um. Wow. Does Hallmark make a card for that?

Your popcorn balls look fabulous. I think you should make your salted caramel things, put popcorn in that and then dip it all in chocolate. And call me when they're ready.

  6. Did you see the entire carriage blow up monstrosity for sale at Grandin Road? Incredible.

I'm the worlds biggest popcorn fan ever. I mean ever. It's our Friday night routine and when I go without it I grieve. Yet I've never made popcorn balls. And now I want to make them now.

Have you picked out your shopping yet? Did you spend your other prize?
