I have been getting really annoyed lately with the word foodie and it’s connotations. I like food. I like to cook. I like to eat. I blog. Am I a foodie? Good question. What the hell is a foodie anyway? Merriam Webster says it is someone who has an avid interest in the latest food fads. Hmmm then maybe I’m not. I don’t jump on the band wagon easily in fact if I see a band wagon coming I want to run the other way. So no maybe I’m not a ‘foodie’. But then again I like food, live food, plant food and write food so many I am. I’m confused.

I’ll tell what I am striving NOT to be, one of those people who strings together 6-7 adjectives to describe their recipe. “It’s apple wood smoked, aged gouda crumbles sprinkled over organic, gluten free, high fiber wafers” when really it’s cheese on crackers. That is what I DON’T want to be. When your biscuits need 2 lines and 11 commas you need to get hold of yourself firmly and bash your head against the wall. When did recipe names become a string ingredients? Yes I am firmly aware that sometimes I too slip into this but I try, I really try not to. And my promise to you is that I will continue to try not to. And if I do, you are welcome to track me down and bash my head(gently) against the wall. (OK not really cause I’m a wimp)

Rant over. Sorry dear readers, I followed a few people on twitter and their constant updates of their recipes read like a list of ingredients meant to impress. Did it? Why no, it annoyed, so I unfollowed them. Grrr they give food writers a bad name. Like this simple fall dish, Hot Cabbage Salad. It could be something like “Cabbage and Spinach with Pancetta and Walnuts in Balsamic Vinaigrette” but why? when it is simply a Hot Cabbage Salad. If you like cabbage, have cabbage or know its on sale you’ll probably read the post and the recipe, if not oh well. I think the long chains of ingredients are a turn off and show a bit of desperation. Could be I’m totally whacked and the only one who feels this way.

Hot Cabbage Salad

for vinaigrette
1 clove of garlic, minced
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp honey
1 1/2 TBSP vinegar
2 1/2 TBSP olive oil
for salad
1/2 cup of walnuts
4 ounces pancetta, chopped
1 pound of red cabbage, chopped to bite sized pieces
2 handfuls of spinach washed with stems removed

put first 4 ingredients in a small food processor or blender, pulse to combine
add vinegar pulse again
slowly pour in oil and whirl until emulsified, set aside
in a dry large cast iron skillet over moderate heat cook the walnuts for 3 minutes or until they start to toast
add the chopped pancetta fry until it is crispy
remove and set aside
in the same pan stir in the cabbage, cover and cook until the cabbage is just tender, don’t cook it to death here
add the spinach and toss to wilt
pour into salad bowl add the dressing and the reserved pancetta and walnut mixture stir to evenly distribute dressing
eat as soon as possible do not pass go do collect 200 dollars oh wait never mind

So does the word foodie mean anything to you? What? I really want to know!
